Update: Protecting Churches from Fraud

Fraudsters regularly try to gain access to church databases to run various scams.

The most common way for a scammer to gain access to a database is to trick a church admin into adding a fraudulent email address to the profile of another user with access to the People database. Once the scammer’s email address is on an admin’s profile, that scammer can then log in as that user and see your entire church database. The scammer will then harvest the contact information of the people in your church for use in various scams.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen an uptick in these occurrences.

In an effort to protect your church, we’ve implemented a change in permissions. Going forward, admins will not be able to edit the email addresses or phone numbers of other users with access to the People database. When these users need to edit their login information, they can edit their own profile by logging in or by making changes in Church Center.

We understand that there are times when this will be an inconvenience, and we don’t take this change lightly. However, noting the irreversible effects of these scams, protecting the security of our churches and their congregants is our first priority.
